Description of Services - Building Department
The Building Department's main responsibility is to interpret and enforce the state building, electrical, plumbing, gas, fire prevention and mechanical codes, as well as local zoning bylaws and Architectural Access Board Regulations.   Building Codes and their proper application help provide for safe buildings and structures.  Enforcement of Building codes helps prevent property damage from perils such as fire, flood, high winds, snow loads, seismic forces from earthquakes, and most importantly, protects against injury or loss of life.  The Building Department staff issue permits, inspect construction at regular intervals, and conduct periodic safety inspections of multi-family housing, restaurants, schools, religious institutions, and other places of assembly, and levy fines or prosecute when necessary to obtain code compliance.

Electrical / Wiring Inspector
The Wiring Inspector's main responsibility is to interpret and enforce the State and National Electrical Codes for the safety of the public.   Electrical Codes and their proper application help provide for safe buildings and structures.  Enforcement of Electrical Codes helps prevent property damage from perils such as fire, power surge or electrocution,  and most importantly, protects against injury or loss of life.

Plumbing / Gas Inspector
The Plumbing and Gas Inspector's main responsibility is to interpret and enforce the State Plumbing Code - M.G.L. 142 and the Environmental Code for the safety of the public.   Plumbing and Gas Codes and their proper application help provide for sanitation and safety of buildings and structures.  The Plumbing and Gas Inspector also inspects Mechanical Equipment.
